Blue Jays dangling Burnett
A.J. Burnett can opt out of his contract after this season, so it’s not a huge surprise that the Blue Jays are looking to deal him.  Rumor is, though, that the team is not happy with David Eckstein or John McDonald at short, and is looking for a shortstop in return.   (Toronto Sun)

Indians getting ready to start selling
Indians GM Mark Shapiro says “it’s pretty obvious” his club is in sell mode.  Cleveland is sitting 12.5 games out of first after being swept by the White Sox this week, but that’s not the only thing that makes it obvious: there were dozens of dorky-looking guys in polo shirts with clipboards scouting C.C. Sabathia last night.  (Indians.mlb.com)

Cubs farmhand still hears about football past
Cubs prospect Jeff Samardzija is best known for being Brady Quinn’s favorite target at Notre Dame a couple seasons ago.  Samardzija was projected by some to be a first round pick in the NFL draft, but decided to play baseball instead.  Recently promoted to Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate, he was greeted by a uniform with “83” on it, the same number he wore during his football days in South Bend. (Daily Herald)

Royals fans unpatriotic?
It’s apparently a popular tradition at Royals games to finish the national anthem by singing “…and the home of the CHIEFS!” instead of “brave.”  One former player says that it’s “disrespectful” and “classless,” and that it makes free agents want to avoid playing in Kansas City.  Well, that and the brutal team.  (Kansas City Star)

Run quickly and carry a big bat
Hanley Ramirez gave teammate Mike Jacobs’ bat a try a little over two weeks ago, and has since switched to using a 35-inch stick.  It seems to be working: in the 15 games since the switch, Ramirez has gone 21-for-62 with five homers.  (Marlins.mlb.com)

Cooley opens his own eBay store
Chris Cooley recently rediscovered his love of football cards at a sports memorabilia store in a Dulles mall.  He ended up spending about $275 bucks on packs of cards, highlighted by “scoring three different Cooley cards.”  He and his wife have set up an eBay store to sell some of the more valuable cards online.  (Yahoo! Vanderjagt struggles in Canadian debut
Kicker Mike Vanderjagt signed with the Toronto Argonauts after being unable to latch on with an NFL team, and he missed his first three field goal attempts of the season.  He managed to hit two kicks in the fourth quarter, and he’ll have to start a nice little streak if he’s going to return to the NFL this season.  (National Post)

Duhan offered deal by Magic
A few days after being offered a two-year, $7 million deal by the Knicks, Chris Duhon was reportedly offered a three-year deal worth about $10 million by the Magic.  It’s nice money for a backup.  He’s expected to decide between the two teams over the weekend.  (Orlando Sentinel)

Bulls meeting with Deng, Gordon
With first round pick Derrick Rose busy getting speeding tickets, the Bulls have occupied themselves by attempting to bring Luol Deng and Ben Gordon into the fold.  The team met with Deng on Wednesday and will meet with Gordon today.  Both men turned down five-year, $50 million deals before last season, but both also had off years.  (Chicago Tribune)

Vancouver not worth $20 million to Sundin
Vancouver offered Mats Sundin a two-year, $20 million deal, but that’s not enough to convince the 37-year-old to jump at the offer.  He said Wednesday that he wasn’t ready to make a decision just yet, but thanks anyway for the offer. (TSN.ca)

Kane gets first assist of offseason
The Blackhawks made the biggest splash of free agency on Tuesday by signing defenseman Brian Campbell, and they owe their young forward at least a little thanks: Patrick Kane reportedly pitched Brian Campbell on what a great city Chicago was to play in.  (Chicago Tribune)
