Be in sheer heaven this spring Feb. 19: Style expert Stacy London shows how to wear this hot new fashion trend for weekends, evenings and work. Today Show Fashion |
There is a lot of sheer clothing hitting the stores this spring, and whether you need pieces for work, weekend or evening, we'll show you how to wear them for every body type. A few things to remember about sheer clothing: Don't panic! Most of the sheer clothing you see from runway photos will come with a lining when it hits the stores. Layering sheers is another way to help conceal what is underneath. And finally, bold prints can help take the fear out of sheer as they create an illusion of being more opaque.
Weekend
You will see a lot of the psychedelic prints still in the market for spring this season. Sheer fabrics make them a bit softer. Pair them with bold colors for the most updated look. Find a print and color combination that doesn't overwhelm you. The solid-color fitted cardigan balances the bold print and loose shape. When wearing a looser top, pair it with something more fitted to balance the body and not lose the shape of your frame. When you're petite, wear a miniskirt at the length that gives you the longest leg line.
What you saw on TODAY: Sheer top: Milly at Bergdorf Goodman department stores; $247. Green cardigan: J Crew; $62. White skirt: J Crew; $49.50. Blue patent clutch: Bisou Bisou at JCPenney department stores nationwide. Bangle and earrings: Gerard Yosca; call 212-302-4349. Flats: Vince Camuto at Piperlime.com; $110.
Work
Sheer clothing is not appropriate for work, but sheer accents are. A tie sheer blouse is a great accent under a suit. It almost acts as a scarf. It allows us to update the work wardrobe in a trendy way without being too revealing. If you're long and lean, a big tie isn't distracting, but if you have a larger chest you should avoid this look because it can make you look cluttered up top.
What you saw on TODAY: Sheer printed top: Zara; $89 Blazer and slacks: Banana Republic; $198 and $108. Yellow heels: Enzo Angiolini at Zappos; $92.95. Clutch: Lauren Merkin. Earrings: RJ Graziano at Bloomingdale's stores nationwide. Bracelet: Ben Amun; www.benamun.com.
Evening
There are tons of sheer dresses for evening, but most of us won't pull off the bohemian “out and proud” look. And I do think it takes away from sheer, even cheapens it, to show a bra underneath. Look for dresses with built-in slips; this and the sheer overlay has a romantic look. If you have a smaller chest, look for dresses with sheer, strategically placed parts like an illusion neckline or sheer back.
What you saw on TODAY: Teal dress: Laundry at Macy’s; $225. Gold heels: Aldo; $100. Jewelry: Lee Angel; www.leeangel.com. Clutch: Santi at Bloomingdale's stores nationwide.
Trendy
Being young and trendy can be tricky with curves. Tunics tend to look like tents if you have a larger chest, so be sure to find pieces that pay some attention to the waist. Wear one that is cut closer to the body so that it'll actually flatter your frame. A side note: Be careful when choosing supertrendy looks like this after 35. The older we get, it becomes more flattering to wear trends like sheer in more classic shapes and leave these more adventurous silhouettes behind!
