Video: Hail to the chief with cookies!

Choosing a new commander in chief means debates, TV ads and, of course, Family Circle magazine’s quadrennial cookie vote. For the last four face-offs, Family Circle asked the spouses of the presidential candidates to share their favorite cookie recipe, then had readers weigh in on their favorite. So far the ballots have been an excellent predictor of who’ll end up in the White House, since the winner’s better half has gone on to capture the general election every time.

In 1992, it was Hillary Clinton’s cookies vs. Barbara Bush’s tasty treats. The winner? Hillary Clinton. Both cookies were chock-full of chocolate, so we can assume that the oats were what put Hillary over the top.

In 2004, Laura Bush’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chunks ran against Teresa Heinz Kerry’s Pumpkin Spice Cookies. Laura Bush took in the most votes — Teresa’s cakey, raisin-studded cookies just didn’t measure up with voters:

Recipe: Clinton’s Chips

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup firmly packed light-brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups rolled old-fashioned oats
  • 1 package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
Preparation

1. Heat oven to 350°. Grease two large baking sheets.

2. Combine flour, salt and baking soda on a sheet of waxed paper.

3. In a large bowl, beat together the shortening, sugars and vanilla with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs, beating until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour mixture and rolled oats. Stir in chocolate chips.

4. Drop batter by well-rounded teaspoonfuls onto prepared sheets.

5. Bake at 350° for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Cool cookies on sheets on wire racks for 2 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Serving Size

Makes 3 dozen cookies

Recipe: Laura Bush’s Oatmeal-Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups light-brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3 cups quick cook oats (not old-fashioned)
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 1/2 packages (8 ounces each) chocolate chunks (3 cups)
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped dried sour cherries
Preparation

1. Heat oven to 350°. Line 2 large baking pans with parchment paper.

2. With an electric mixer, cream together the butter and both sugars. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, then beat in vanilla. Add flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and oats; slowly beat until blended.

3. Stir in walnuts, chocolate and cherries. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto prepared cookie sheets.

4. Bake at 350° for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on pan on wire rack for 1 minute. Transfer cookies directly to racks to cool completely.

Serving Size

Makes 8 dozen cookies

Recipe: Barbara Bush’s Batch

Ingredients
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons very hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Preparation

1. Heat oven to 375°.

2. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt onto waxed paper.

3. Beat butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar and egg in large bowl with electric mixer until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in hot water and vanilla. Gradually beat in flour mixture until blended and smooth. Stir in chocolate chips.

4. Drop well-rounded teaspoonfuls onto large greased baking sheet.

5. Bake in 375° oven for 10 minutes or until golden. Cool on sheet on wire rack 1 minute. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Serving Size

Makes 3 dozen cookies
