Nadine Velazquez doesn't want to hear about world peace.
At least not at the Miss Universe contest July 13 in Vietnam, where she will be judging.
“That thing about 'I want to change the world, to help combat poverty,'” Velazquez says in a sarcastic voice and laughs, “I don't want to hear that, because they're not going to do it.”
The “My Name Is Earl” actress says she wants to see passion.
“I think the girls have to have a true passion, something to fight for, some desire to help people in a realistic way,” says Velazquez, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who spoke in a mix of Spanish and English in a telephone interview from Los Angeles.
The 57th Annual Miss Universe Competition will air live from Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam. All of the contestants are from more than 80 countries around the world and will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview.
Miss Universe 2007 was Japan native, Riyo Mori. During her reign, she has traveled the world as an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research and legislation.
The newly crowned Miss Universe 2008 will go on to do the same philanthropy work.
