Video: How to get picky eaters to choose healthy options

  1. Closed captioning of: How to get picky eaters to choose healthy options

    >>> now on joy's diet s.o.s. joy bauer has advice for keeping your blood sugar in check. getting the family on board with eating habits and deciphering tricky labels.

    >> good morning, al.

    >> we have nancy from lebanon maine on the line. good morning, nancy.

    >> good morning.

    >> what's your question for joy?

    >> my question is i need help getting my diabetes under control. what can i do to keep my blood sugars in check?

    >> from the food perspective there is two strategic things you can do that i know will help lower your blood sugar . the first thing is to keep a tight lid on all carbohydrates. make sure you choose the ones that are packaged with fiber. so that will be vegetables, fruit and whole grains. more important than that, you want to make sure you include a good amount of protein with all of your meals and snack. that's because protein helps to slow the absorption of carbohydrate in the body and helps to temper your blood sugars. with those things in mind some of the best foods you need to eat are going to be the lean proteins, fish, seafood, skinless poultry, egg whites, tofu, starchy beans and lentils. they have some carbohydrates but come with the protein and fiber. so it's all good. nuts and seeds are low in carbohydrates. have healthy fat, protein and fibers. they are terrific for blood sugars. if you follow the strategy and go to your doctor regularly and get exercise i'm confident you can lower your numbers.

    >> now to sara from san diego . she has a question for us. good morning.

    >> caller: good morning, y'all. i'm visiting my family in new orleans next week and i'm really into healthy eating . and they are not. i would love to introduce my family to healthy, clean eating but i have two tween sisters who are picky eaters. can you help me?

    >> you will consider this a super fun challenge. there is no way you will completely convert them, but i would tell you to go to new orleans armed with a bunch of recipes that are healthier versions of some of their un unhealthy favorites. announce that you are going to cook dinner a few nights during the week. so if your sisters love fried chicken come with a recipe for oven roasted chicken tenders . if they love lasagna, make a spatula s -- spinach lasagna. recruit them into the kitchen, bond. it's great quality bonding time and maybe you can even get some of your passion for health rubbed off on them. either way , you will eat well when you're there and they will have healthy fare as well.

    >> and bring them hats like yours.

    >> and say "y'all".

    >> you're rocking that.

    >> you're beautiful.

    >> thank you, sara.

    >> take care. we have a viewer e-mail from susan in new york. she writes what's the difference between fully high dodge nated oil and partly hydrogenated oil and if a label reads just hydrogenated oil, does it mean it can be either one?

    >> hydrogenated oil contains trans-fats. it's a double hit to your heart. if you see partly hydrogenated oil, put it back on the shelf. fully hydrogenated is when they add more hydrogen to the oil during the processing and it becomes fully saturated. there is no more thaft but there is saturated fat . it's clearly not poison like trans-fat. neither oil is a bargain but partly hydrogenated is way worse. if it just says hydrogenated on the oil you don't know if it's partly or fully. play it safe. skip it.

    >> joy --

    >> that was a great question.
