“Mariska Hargitay has been sidelined with a pneumothorax (a partially collapsed lung),” the rep told Access Hollywood exclusively.
Despite the injury, “she will appear in all episodes for the rest of the season of Law & Order: SVU,” her rep added.
According to WebMD, pneumothorax occurs as a result of the “buildup of air in the space between the lung and the chest wall.”
It is often caused by a chest injury like a puncture wound or broken rib, but can occur without injury.
Treatment can include oxygen and observation by a doctor, while serious cases can require surgery.
Hargitay was one of several nominated actors, including “Milk’s” James Franco and Sean Penn, who did not appear at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.
