The daughters of President Barack Obama have helped inaugurate something new in San Francisco.

While their mom, Michelle Obama, was helping volunteers build a school playground Monday, Malia and Sasha Obama were among the first passengers on a new cable car making its maiden runs in the city.

Metropolitan Transportation Agency chief Nathaniel Ford escorted the girls and their grandmother, Marian Robinson. They rode from Nob Hill to Lombard Street, billed as the "Crookedest Street in the World."

Ford says he's honored that the girls rode along.

Michelle Obama was in San Francisco to promote the president's national volunteering initiative.

The initiative, called United We Serve, was launched last week by President Barack Obama in a video message. He's urging people to help in the nation's economic recovery by volunteering at schools and hospitals and by pitching in on community projects.

Michelle Obama joined California first lady Maria Shriver and several hundred local volunteers at an elementary school in San Francisco. The school is transforming part of its playground into a garden and produce stand that will be staffed by kids and seniors. Proceeds will go to the school.
