Video: Beware of these recalled products

  1. Closed captioning of: Beware of these recalled products

    >>> rid of stains.

    >>> now to important information for parents. in the past fiscal year, the consumer products safety commission announced 563 product recalls, but experts are concerned you may still have many of these products in your home posing a danger to your children. don mayes is senior director of product safety for " consumer reports ," and he joins us this morning. don, good morning.

    >> good morning.

    >> you say tens of millions of children each year are needlessly exposed to unsafe products. that's a pretty strong statement that's going to alarm a lot of parents. you've formed a partnership, though, to try and educate parents about this. tell us about it.

    >> that's right. " consumer reports " formed a partnership with the national pta, parent teacher association , and the national school boards association to help disseminate important safety information to the parents of school-aged children. and what we're trying to do is push our message out through newsletters, electronic newsletters, through our website, to try to make sure that people learn of the recall information that could be essentially important to the children in their home.

    >> yeah, because we talk about these products being defective. we've said it in the news. then it just kind of disappears, and if people didn't catch that news program, they may have never heard about it.

    >> that's exactly right, and that's why the consumer response rate to recall notice seas dismally poor, at best 30%. for even major toy recalls on the front page of the paper, there's about a 10% response --

    >> so, we need a better system in this country.

    >> absolutely. we need a better way to reach parents and that's why we've teamed up to disseminate the recall information, get them into the homes of all parents. that's our objective.

    >> okay. you've brought along some products so people can be aware. this first one is a bassinet, and this serves as a lot of different products out there that could be lurking in your bedroom. you may not know it's defective or it's been recalled. tell us about this bassinet, originally issued by cpsc back in september of 2007 ?

    >> that's correct. this is a particularly dangerous product. this is a bassinet that can be converted into a bedside sleeper, so set up against a bed.

    >> right.

    >> the problem is that it can expose a dangerous gap by which a child can slip through, get their head hung up and strangled.

    >> wow.

    >> there have been four fatalities associated with the product. now, the company, simplicity, is no longer in business. so if people own one of these, stop using it immediately and go back to the retailers who have sold this product for their money back or a store credit.

    >> so the company is no longer a business. you go back to the store, you'll get a refund, you can get something new. obviously, you want to make sure this is not in your home.

    >> or passed down.

    >> good point. people give away these bassinets to their friends when this get pregnant and have children. some other products. you brought this children's mask. what's concerning about this?

    >> sure. just in time for halloween, this mask has come through with lead paint on it. now, that violates the federal lead standard. lead paint has been banned for 30 years. there's no reason to see it on a product like this. when the consumer products safety commission discover it, they decided to get it recalled immediately.

    >> okay, and this pendant also something of concern?

    >> yeah. this has been a real concern. we've seen a lot of this come through within the past few years. this is cheap children's metal jewelry.

    >> okay.

    >> that is comprised of a lot of lead in the metal.

    >> oh, wow.

    >> and if a child mouths it or worse, swallows it.

    >> my kids always put their jewelry in their mouth. that's just what they do.

    >> that's a serious problem. we advise parents not even buy metal jewelry for their children.

    >> what's wrong with these shoes?

    >> this is a precautionary recall. these are shoes where the tips on the soles can break off and become a choking hazard .

    >> oh, wow.

    >> now, we found no incidents in the united states associated with these. however, in the uk there have been several incidents in which the pieces have broken off and the child put the piece in their mouth.

    >> clark's company that makes the shoes makes the point that no one's been injured in the united states . the uk, six reports of the rubber pieces detaching.

    >> that's correct.

    >> but still an example of something to look out for.

    >> exactly.

    >> let's move on to this dvd player sold by walmart. what's the problem with this?

    >> this is a portable dvd player that was overheating and in some cases catching fire. there have been 14 reports of problems with this dvd player , several fires, including some causing property damage. now, 4.2 million of these have been recalled. if you own one of these, take it back to walmart, get your money back.

    >> okay. also, we want to talk about blinds, and this is something all parents need to be worried about. i've got this issue in my house, too. i'm always trying to loop up the cords. what's wrong with these blinds?

    >> blinds can be a serious problem. recently there have been 5.5 million blinds recalled because they can cause a strangulation hazard. these particular ones, there have been more than 4 million of these recalled because if the cord is pulled off, it can form this dangerous loop by which a child can get their head entrapped and strangle. there has been at least one fatality associated with these blinds, so it's very important to heed the recall. go back to the manufacturer, make sure they have a safety kit installed that can release the cord.

    >> thank you so much for all this important advice, don mays. we mention, we reached out to all the companies involved in the recalls and those we were able to contact all supported the program you are now cooperative with, so we appreciate your time.

    >> our website is consumerreports.org/schoolsafety will give all the information about the recalls as they are announced.

    >> fantastic. important, life-saving information.

    >>> coming up next, down- home cooking

Hundreds of potentially dangerous consumer products are recalled each and every year — some 563 in 2008 alone. But fewer than a third are ever actually returned, which means that if you happen to have bought a recalled product, chances are it may still be lurking in your home.

“The consumer response is dismally poor; at best about 30 percent,” Don Mays, senior director of product safety for Consumers Reports, told Amy Robach live on TODAY Friday. “For some of the major toy recalls that even made the front pages of the paper, it’s about a 10 percent response.”

Mays gave Robach a guided tour through a range of products that have been recalled in recent years, but that consumers may not even know were deemed a potential hazard.

Simplicity bassinets
One of the more alarming recalls, and lack of public response to it, was the recall of a bassinet/bedside sleeper made by Simplicity Inc. that was sold under the Simplicity and Graco logos. Federal regulators recalled some 1 million of the item, the largest recall of a child’s bedding product in history. Although the recall generated headlines, there are still likely thousands of the bassinets still in use around the country.

Why are they dangerous? “The bassinet can be converted into a bedside sleeper, and the problem is, it can expose a dangerous gap by which a child can slip through, get their head hung up, and strangle,” Mays explained. He added that four fatalities have been associated with the product.

Even worse, a bassinet is the type of item that may not be discarded when a child outgrows it — instead, they are often passed on to friends and family members, or resold by the owner. In this particular case, Simplicity is no longer in business, so consumers have to go to the point of purchase to turn in the product and get their money back, Mays said.

Bassinets made by Simplicity Inc. spurred the largest-ever recall of a children’s bedding product.

Where lead lurks
Other product recalls are just as eye-opening. Some Halloween masks sold in gift shops and costume stores around the country from November 2008 to March 2009 were found to have high levels of lead paint, which gave Mays pause — especially since Halloween 2009 is just around the corner.

TODAY
This cat’s mask was found to contain high levels of lead paint.
“Lead paint has been banned for 30 years,” he told Robach, pointing to a gaily colored mask with the face of a cat. “There’s no reason to see that in a product like this.”

Many types of child’s cheap metal jewelry have also been found to contain lead and prompted millions in recalls, Mays added. He showed Robach an example on TODAY in the form of a metal pendant made by the same company that made the cat mask.

Molded rubber pieces on the soles of these children’s shoes can detach, creating a choking hazard.
Small items, big hazards
Also potentially hazardous to children: certain shoes that were sold by Clarks stores. Although no injuries have been reported, there have been some close calls. Mays showed Robach how molded rubber pieces on the soles of the shoes can detach, posing a choking hazard to infants and young children. (Clarks is participating in a voluntary recall.)

Mays also showed Robach one of more than 4 million portable DVD players sold at Walmart from January 2006 to July 2009 that can overheat, posing danger of burning users or starting fires. In fact, there have been 14 reports of the small players overheating, and in five of those cases, fires that caused property damage resulted.

These remote-controlled portable DVD players can overheat, causing burns or fires.
But perhaps the biggest potential home hazard of all is posed by certain brands of window blinds, Mays told Robach. Some 5.5 million blinds and shades sold at Target, Ikea, Pottery Barn Kids and other retailers have been recently recalled. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of one child a month dies after getting strangled by the cord of a window blind or shade.

Mays said Consumer Reports recommends families replace any blinds or shades that were bought before 2001. And companies such as Lewis Hyman, Inc., which has been a subject of some of the recalls, offer repair kits to large eliminate the possibility a child could get their head caught in a cord and strangle.

TODAY
More than 5 million blinds sold at such popular retailers as Target and Ikea have been recalled.
These cases are just the type of crucial information Mays wants to get out to parents through PTAs and school boards.

“We want to try to make sure people learn the recall information that could be essentially important to the children in their homes,” he told Robach.
