Video: How to wear this season's tricky trends

Want to wear the latest trends but not sure if they'll work on you? Not all the trends out there are easy to put together — especially if transitioning from day to night. Stacy London explains how to easily master fun cut-outs, strong prints and even lingerie-inspired styles.

Cut-outs
This trend is a whole lot of sexy and makes most sense as evening attire. When we talk about cut-outs, it literally means a cut out piece in the clothing itself. For sexy cocktail attire, look for dresses with a cut out at the hip, back, shoulder or arm. Make sure the clothing here fits your body well and that you like the area of your body you'll be exposing!

This is a bold look. Pair it with strong jewelry but don't clutter this outfit. Keep it clean and sleek. Surprisingly, sexy is not the only way to go with the cut out trend. For day, try finding a blouse with sheer illusion patch sleeves or a jacket with slits that have a lining, so no skin is exposed. Pieces like these can be paired with a trouser or skirt and worn to the office. Accessories are also a "safer" way to try this trend. Look for shoes and boots and bags that have peek-a-boo cut outs for day or evening.

Mixing prints
Every few years, this trend comes around. Mixing prints can be tricky but not impossible. This trend lends itself most easily to casual day wear. This season, we are seeing a mix of graphics florals and even tribal style prints. For day: try staying in the same color palette with two of your prints and make sure the third print is a neutral. Try to mix prints that are relatively the same scale in size. Keep your accessories in the same color as the predominant color in the outfit or keep them in neutral colors. For evening, try mixing bolder, distinct patterns to really pack a punch. For example a bold big floral print on a black background mixes well with a smaller white graphic print on a larger black background. While the black backgrounds holds the pieces together, one print is the "main character" and the other is the "supporting actress". Add more evening-like accessories here: a satin clutch, an embellished high heel, bold graphic jewelry.

Lingerie
Like cut outs, this trend feels most appropriate at night. We associate lingerie with the bedroom and seduction and Madonna breaking all style rules. But now, lingerie is making its mark as a trend this season. Nude and black, a popular color combination for vintage lingerie has crossed over into clothing for evening attire as well. For a modern look, try one of the new bustiers, meant to be worn as clothing with a lace jacket and pencil skirt. This look is sexy while being completely covered. Pair it with some rhinestone jewelry and open sandals for a modern retro look.

You might think the lingerie look is impossible for the work place and if you were showing too much skin, you would be right. But consider the bustier as a modern sort of vest. Try wearing it over a button-down shirt under a suit for a look that is original but totally professional. Keep it work appropriate with power neutrals, like a gray skirt suit, white shirt but add pop with a red, or bright colored, heel.
