In 2009, Republican Nevada state legislator Sharron Angle declared her candidacy against Democrat U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — one of the most powerful men in the nation. Thus began a whirlwind year that would take Angle, a former teacher and housewife, from relative obscurity to becoming a leading voice in the surging Tea Party movement. In “Right Angle,” she shares her insights as both a concerned mother and an active participant in government. Here are excerpts from the Forward and various chapters.

Today’s federal government is in crisis. Corruption is rampant. Congress represents special interests instead of the wishes of the people that elected them. At both the state and federal level, there is ignorance, disregard and, even more threatening, a desire to rewrite the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Can America recover from the downward spiral of debt, immorality and “good-old-boy” power-for-paybacks corruption?

Drastic measures must be taken to stop these politicians in their tracks. Does this mean a revolution is in order? No. I am simply saying the American people can replace corrupt, weak, and self-interested politicians by raising the standard to that which proclaimed liberty in 1776. The “Silent Majority” can be silent no longer. We do not have the option or the luxury to sit on the sidelines. Transition means a grassroots movement with grassroots leadership.

I am prepared to help lead a movement of citizens dedicated to the principles of the Constitution. Are you ready to go with me all the way and take our country back to those constitutional principles?

I write this book with the intent that my answers to the “Why” questions be easily understood by all. Herein, I will state political beliefs and values formed by my life experiences. I will also point out the spread between the lessons we learned in civics class and the current world of real politics. I believe that the truth will set us free and keep us free. It is my aim to offer facts with grace, mete out truth with mercy, and inspire you, the reader, to help me reclaim our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.

I realize that to be truly personal, I cannot protect myself. I must write from my heart. I must give a full and accurate account of my values, beliefs, and experiences to expose my opponents’ spin when they try to use my words and actions out of context against me. U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) revealed (to top Democrats in what he thought was a private conversation) that the simple but effective Democrat campaign strategy against Tea Party GOP is to use the word “extreme.” That certainly has a familiar ring.

By 2010, and after numerous outrageous deals to pass the Obama agenda, people across the country rejected these policies. Under the new regime of Reid, Pelosi, and Obama, Nevada led the nation in unemployment and mortgage foreclosures. Nevada citizens felt a national mandate to send U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid back home to Searchlight. (I do not mean to besmirch Searchlight, but many know the truth that Harry really lives in a posh Ritz Carlton condominium in Washington, D.C.). This modest volume answers, in my own words, “why” I decided to run against Harry Reid.

In our civics class we learned, or should have learned, the lessons of the Founding documents that pertain to the rules of representative government. As we observe real political life today, few seem to be following the rules. The disconnect between principles and reality has caused a deep schism of cynicism in many Americans. So great is the disgust and frustration with what can only be termed corruption, that fifty percent, or less, of those eligible to vote even register: only fifty percent or less of those registered even cast a vote. I interpret the large number of absent ballots as a vote of no confidence in the way our representative government functions today.

Reagan encouraged his cabinet to use successful business practices to build efficiency in government. He was interested in results regardless of the source. Reagan, the great coalition builder, coined the eighty percent precept. “The person who agrees with you eighty percent of the time is a friend and an ally — not a twenty percent traitor.”

    >>> sharon angle made a big splash last year when she ran against harry reid in nevada after a controversial campaign and tight race she lost the election. is her political career over? her new book is called "right angle." sharron angle , good morning to you.

    >> good morning. congratulations on your new position.

    >> oh, thank you. you call yourself an accidental politician in the book. it all starteded when you wanted to home school your son after he failed kindergarten and you were told you couldn't do it. you said you felt as if the government had interfered with your family.

    >> that's right. when they tell you that you can't do something that you know is right for your children and the government is supposed to be here to help us, not get in the way of things. when they said, you can't do that, i immediately said, how do i fix this? and the way to fix it was to get involved with the government. that's what "right angle" is about. it's how i got involved with government and i encourage others to get involveded, too. the cost of freedom is constant vigilance. i'm asking people to go to sharronann cur sharronangle.com.

    >> fast forward many years to the election against harry reid last november. in the book, there is a section in which you pose the question, did harry reid steal nevada? in other words, did he steal the election. do you have evidence or are you just asking the question?

    >> we have a complaint filed with the department of justice .

    >> do you have evidence?

    >> it is exactly what we found the evidence as far as what happened with the casinos and the seiu. that's one of the things i think people will be interested in. we have also formed a political action committee called our voice which is really to say we as people do not want to have this kind of thing happening in our united states . we were talking just before we came on about our young men and women who are serving now in afghanistan. one of the things that they do take over there is the idea that people should have the right to choose, the right to vote. that's our voice. so that's what we are encouraging with this political action committee . that's one of the things that we are doing with this book is all the proceeds go into our voice pac.org. what we are going to do is make sure our voice is heard in elections.

    >> one of the things you say in this book, you're very critical of president obama 's policies.

    >> yes.

    >> at one point you also question the legitimacy of his election. you say 53% of american voters elected a president not on qualifications or experience, not even on the content of his demonstrated character. the national media promoted obama on feelings and gave him a pass on anything problematic. this comes after you talk about affirmative action being a distortion of martin luther king 's preachings. are you suggesting that americans elected barack obama because of his race, because it was the politically correct thing to do?

    >> i'm suggesting that often we let other people form our opinions rather than going to find out what the facts are. i'm encouraging people in "right angle" to go look at the facts. look at people's records. see what they have done. you know, we have a lot of pretty faces on tv. but we don't know what they have done. what we need is more than just a pretty face when it comes to government. we need people who really understand what we need as people.

    >> you know, you're calling president obama a pretty face ?

    >> some people think so.

    >> are you saying then that americans would actually during a time when we were at war, two countries, with an economy as bad as it was already starting to look and become that americans would actually vote on someone because he was, as you say, a pretty face ?

    >> i think it happens all too often. we really do believe what they said about people on television. i'm a perfect example of that during the debate we had over the election that i was just in. really, right angle -- and you can get this at sharronangle.com. it pulls back the curtain on politics and what goes on behind the scenes and what we, as voters, need to know is going on behind the scenes so we can make a choice based on the facts and the record, not just what a person looks like or has a karz charismatic personality.

    >> you say in my thinking the true renaissance woman is comfortable in her own skin. you list yourself, sarah palin and michelle bachmann in the list. what are you plans politically? do you plan to run again?

    >> i haven't closed any doors. everything is open to me. i feel like every american -- that's the american dream . we can be what we want to be. it's just hard work. i'm encouraging everybody to go sharron angle .com and get a copy of the book to find out the inside story .

    >> thanks so much. great talking
