Tom Costello
NBC News Correspondent
Tom Costello is an NBC News correspondent based in Washington, DC. Costello reports regularly for “NBC Nightly News,” “Today,” MSNBC, CNBC, NBC News Radio and NBC Mobile. His beats include transportation, aviation, space, consumer and regulatory issues.
Costello has reported on a range of stories including plane crashes, hurricanes, tornadoes, coal mine disasters, space shuttle launches, Olympic games, elections, state funerals, and from stock market trading floors. His assignments have also taken him around the world: from the terrorist bombings in Madrid to the Korean DMZ, to the Persian Gulf, Asia, Europe and Russia.
He joined NBC News in 2004 as a New York based correspondent and moved to Washington, DC in 2005. Prior to joining NBC News, Costello was the senior correspondent at CNBC Business News. From 1999 to 2002, he gained national recognition as CNBC’s NASDAQ editor, reporting on the stock market bubble, its crash, and the financial markets' recovery after 9/11. From 1996 to 1999, he served as CNBC’s London anchor and correspondent, reporting for both CNBC and NBC News on the equity and currency markets, business developments, and Europe's new monetary union.
Prior to joining CNBC, Costello reported for Financial Times TV from Brussels, Belgium. He also spent six years at KUSA-TV in Denver, and two years at KVIA-TV in El Paso, TX. His local news assignments included the Oklahoma City bombing and the Los Angeles riots.
Costello has been honored with an Emmy, two National Headliner awards, the Society of Professional Journalists award, the RTNDA/Edward R. Murrow award, Associated Press award, Best of Gannett, and recognition from both the University of Colorado and Boston University.
Costello earned a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master's degree in International Commerce from Boston University (Brussels Campus). He is married to Astrid Boon of Brussels, Belgium and lives in Washington, DC with their two children.
