The gift from Carson, an alumnus of the school, will support the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts’ Department of Theatre Arts.

The money also will help renovate and expand the 100-year-old Temple Building. Plans call for a new black box theater and film soundstage, among other things.

“From the halls of the Temple Building to the studios of NBC, Johnny Carson has left an incredible legacy to the world of entertainment and television,” Terry L. Fairfield, president and chief executive officer of the foundation, said in a statement.

“Through this generous gift, Johnny Carson creates another rich legacy to provide educational opportunities and possibilities for the next wave of actors, designers, writers and filmmakers at the University of Nebraska.”

The gift from Carson, 79, was announced Wednesday. Throughout his career, Carson has maintained a strong relationship with the school.
