You don’t have to pore over red-carpet pictures anymore to get the latest in celebrity fashions — some of the hottest star styles are right at your local movie theater!
That’s right; some of Hollywood’s biggest names are setting trends on the screen. And there’s good news — many of the looks are affordable!
Want to get the advance scoop on all the film-fashion trends? (We call them Chicks & Flicks.)
Look no further — they’re right here in the latest edition of our weekly fashion-and-beauty update.
Gwyneth Paltrow in ‘Proof’
In “Proof,” Gwyneth Paltrow reprises the role she played to rave reviews on stage in London’s West End as the daughter of a mathematician who explores the nature of “inheritance.” Gwyneth’s personal style shines through loud and clear here. It’s understated, casual, yet still very chic, whether wearing a Little Black Dress or a chunky sweater with menswear-styled pants. The hippest twist? Frye boots ($239.99), also worn by Chloe Sevigny in “Broken Flowers” and Jessica Simpson in “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
Trend Tip:
Chunky sweaters in neutral colors are a must-have for fall. They’re also worn by Diane Lane in “Must Love Dogs.”
Rachel McAdams in ‘Red Eye’
A super-efficient executive gets far more than she bargained for on this airplane actioner starring Hollywood’s newest “it” girl, Rachel McAdams. Her all-business menswear attire is “the” office look for fall. It’s best when made feminine just like Rachel does it, with soft hair, makeup and a few ladylike touches. Grab the look with a great menswear coat — hers is from DKNY — button-down shirts, pencil skirts, tweed jackets and slingback pumps.
Trend Tip:
This is a very chic look when done in layers of gray and black (both hot colors for fall). If you want to play up the feminine menswear twist, add a souped-up white shirt or blouse — a touch of ruffles, lace or sexy silk transforms the trend in an instant!
Scarlett Johansson in ‘The Island’
This island is far from a utopian paradise, as Scarlett Johansson discovers all too soon. We love her unique mix of mod and trendy menswear, which becomes the very definition of personal style as she incorporates all the latest looks and makes them totally her own. How did she do it? With Puma NuMostra sneakers (available in September), pointy-toed black boots, skinny black stretch pants, a distressed motorcycle leather jacket (from Levi’s) and a distressed brown leather tote, mixed with silver metallic (from Earl).
Trend Tip:
The motorcycle look is edgy and gets even trendier with the addition of metallic accessories. Motorcycle jackets — “in” for fall — are versatile and can also be worn more casually with cords or jeans.
Kate Hudson in ‘Skeleton Key’
The fashion in this movie has nothing to do with its New Orleans/voodoo setting — Kate Hudson uses her own eclectic style to make the most of all the current trends. Get the hip look with a black spaghetti strap dress (hers is from Miu Miu), black velvet flip flops ($10 from American Eagle), a black messenger bag and lots of bangle bracelets, mixing silver and brass.
Trend Tip:
Black is back! Add more style with layers of necklaces — especially charm necklaces with a whimsical mix of beads. Or go for a silver padlock necklace like the one Kate wears in the film (from Tiffany, $175). Messenger bags also make a comeback and are especially hip when embellished.
Sharon Stone in ‘Broken Flowers’
Bill Murray’s search for old flames leads him to Sharon Stone in “Broken Flowers.” In it, Sharon sports a retro look with a bit of a biker edge, which is beautifully softened with another hot '70s revival: the silver freeform heart pendant. Originally created by Elsa Peretti exclusively for Tiffany back in the '70s and reinterpreted a thousand times since then, her "open heart" pendant is popping up all over again this season. You can get the look for less than $20 from JLO for Jennifer Lopez, whose pendants are sold at Macy's.
Trend Tip:
Want the real deal? Susan Sarandon will be wearing an original Peretti open heart necklace in “Elizabethtown,” which comes out this October. Head over to Tiffany to pick out your favorite version — sterling silver necklaces start at $150, and there's also an 18-karat gold version studded with diamonds for $7,200!Judy Gordon is a New York-based style consultant and the “Today” show’s style editor.
